Man hikes Errigal barefoot as a ‘thank you’ to community

A determined Derry man has completed a barefoot climb of Errigal Mountain.

Gerard Ward did the gruelling rocky climb on Saturday last, with zero foot supports, all in a bid to give back to local charities.

Gerard received immense support during a recent time of need, and his challenge sought to say thank you to his community.

He said: “This time two months ago there was a missing person post put up on Facebook and a lot of people gave their time to go out and search for me.

“A lot has changed since then and I just want to do my bit to raise some money for charities that do a lot of work saving lives and helping people in my community.”

The Errigal climb raised over £1400 for Older People North West and Foyle Prevention.

Afterwards, despite his sore feet, he was delighted to be supporting good causes.

“I have been given help from some of the most unexpected places during my journey and i just want to give something back to the community,” he said.

Gerard’s GoFundMe is still open and donations can be made at: https://gofund.me/70033ace
