A public engagement event has opened for the Ballybofey and Stranorlar Flood Relief Scheme.

Local residents and stakeholders are being invited to have their say about their experiences of flooding in the area, along with thoughts and preferences on possible flood relief measures. There is a history of fluvial (river) and pluvial (rainfall) flooding at Ballybofey and Stranorlar with the most recent significant event recorded in December 2015.

Donegal County Council has appointed Engineering and Environmental Consultants ByrneLooby to design and implement a Flood Relief Scheme for Ballybofey and Stranorlar.

Donegal County Council is working with the Office of Public Works to deliver the project.

This is the first public consultation event, which runs from Monday 27th September to Friday 22nd October 2021.

Details on how to make submissions are available at this link: https://www.floodinfo.ie/frs/en/ballybofey-stranorlar/project-info/public-engagement/

Consultation packs in hard copy are also being sent to residents for those who prefer to make submissions by post, email or phone.

Information on the project, consultation materials and a questionnaire are available on the project websites:

Ballybofey-Stranorlar FRS – Public and Stakeholder Engagement (floodinfo.ie)

Buncrana FRS – Public and Stakeholder Engagement (floodinfo.ie)

Ramelton FRS – Public and Stakeholder Engagement (floodinfo.ie)

If you would like to meet with a member of the project team in person, representatives will be in Ballybofey & Stranorlar, Buncrana and Ramelton on the following dates from 6pm to 8pm:

  1. Ballybofey & Stranorlar – 12th October
  2. Ramelton – 13th October
  3. Buncrana – 14th October

Please note that in person consultations will be upon request and strictly by appointment only.  Should you wish to make an appointment, please contact Donegal County Council Flood Relief Schemes Unit on 074 9153900 or email floodreliefschemes@donegalcoco.ie.

A further public consultation will be held at the end of Stage 1 when the preferred Schemes have been identified.

Cllr Patrick McGowan has welcomed the long awaited news that the project is progressing to this stage.

“We need as much local information as possible. Houses will receive a stamped address envelope to help with responses,” said Cllr McGowan.

The project is currently in Stage 1 “Scheme Analysis and Development”. This involves data collection / surveys, detailed river modelling, and early community engagement to inform the design and identify the preferred Scheme. The aim is to ensure that design is based on the most up to date information and analysis, and that stakeholder and public input regarding flooding, design and environmental constraints are considered as early as possible in the process.

“I would encourage everyone in the B& S area to submit their views or any information they may have it will be of great benefit in informing scheme design as early as possible,” said Cllr McGowan

Donegal County Council encourages anyone who has an interest in these Schemes to submit their views or any information they may have.  This will be of great benefit in informing scheme design as early as possible.
