Naomh Conaill cruise to big SFC win over Termon

written by Chris McNulty October 3, 2021
FacebookTweetLinkedInPrint

NAOMH Conaill returned to winning ways thanks to a routine dispatch of Termon in Glenties.

Naomh Conaill 1-20 Termon 0-6

By Chris McNulty at Davy Brennan Memorial Park

Naomh Conaill hit eleven points in a row, seven of them in the third quarter as Seamus Corcoran’s late goal secured a 17-point win.

Charles McGuinness knocked over eight points for Naomh Conaill, who never seemed in any danger of losing this one.

Naomh Conaill were five up, 0-9 to 0-4, at half-time and Martin Regan’s side nailed the game as a contest after the re-start.

Odhran Doherty’s double as well as points from McGuinness, Kevin McGettigan and Ciaran Thompson opened up a 0-16 to 0-4 deficit.

With the last action of the afternoon, Corcoran goaled for the hosts to put a cherry on the cake.

Termon’s Ryan McFadden posted a 50th minute free that was his side’s first score in 30 minutes of play.

Termon weren’t helped with the enforced withdrawal of star forward Daire McDaid just before half-time with a hamstring injury. McDaid had also spent a period in the dugout after being black carded in the opening minutes.

As the skies above Davy Brennan Memorial Park darkened, tempers frayed for a few minutes after a coming together between Termon forward McDaid and Naomh Conaill defender Jason Campbell.

McDaid and Campbell were sent to the sin bin, their jerseys consigned to the bin.

It took almost four minutes before order was restored after the rather needless squabble.

Before then, Ricky Gallagher clipped over the game’s opening point after 30 seconds, but McGuinness’s double and Jeaic Mac Ceallabhuí’s neat effort had the hosts 0-3 to 0-1 ahead after five minutes.

Termon stayed in touch for a time, McFadden and Gallagher knocking over either end of a quick fire Naomh Conaill brace from Kieran Gallagher and Charles McGuinness.

Naomh Conaill last weekend saw a nine-point lead eroded by Aodh Ruadh and had to settle for a share of the spoils in Ballyshannon. A repeat wasn’t on the cards here as Naomh Conaill cruised their way to a comfortable win.

Termon, who remain without the influence of Aaron Reid, Jack Alcorn and Evan Coleman, pushed St Eunan’s all the way eight days earlier. Even then, a pair of late St Eunan’s goals had Francie Friel’s Termon on the wrong end of a peculiar nine-point margin.

Lady Luck has not smiled on Termon in recent days, the Burn Road men having had to go away to both Naomh Conaill and Kilcar in 2020.

Four points late in the first half – via Thompson, McGettigan, Eunan Doherty and McGuinness – had Naomh Conaill 0-9 to 0-4 in front.

From there, there was only one winner with.

Naomh Conaill: Stephen McGrath; Ultan Doherty, Jason Campbell, Kevin McGettigan (0-2); Odhran Doherty (0-2), Keelin McGill, Ethan O’Donnell; Ciaran Thompson (0-3, 1 ’45), Kieran Brennan; Eunan Doherty (0-2), Jeaic Mac Ceallabhuí (0-1), Eoin Waide; Kieran Gallagher (0-1), Charles McGuinness (0-8, 3f, 1 ’45), Leo McLoone.  Subs: Dermot Molloy (0-1) for Mac Ceallabhuí (38), Marty Boyle for Campbell (42), Seamus Corcoran (1-0) for Waide (42), Nathan Byrne for Gallagher (44), Daniel Gildea for Brennan (52).

Termon: Emmet Maguire; Caolan Gallagher, Bobby McGettigan, Conor O’Grady; James McSharry, Jamie Grant, Barry McGeehan; Ricky Gallagher (0-3), Ryan McFadden (0-2); Oisin Cassidy, Conor Cassidy, Kevin McGettigan; Steve McElwaine (0-1f), Daire McDaid, Anthony Grant.

Subs: Steve McDaid for D.McDaid (30+4), Shane Doherty for McSharry (43), Eoghan Doherty for McElwaine (45).

Referee: Val Murray (Aodh Ruadh).
