Listen: Gibson hails Bonagee squad after positive start to new season

JASON Gibson has hailed Aidan McLaughlin’s desire after the Bonagee frontman’s return to the club’s Ulster Senior League squad.

After playing with Bonagee in the Donegal League over the last couple of seasons, McLaughlin is back in the USL panel and netted twice in Saturday’s 5-0 rout of Monaghan United.

McLaughlin opened the scoring after just 35 seconds and added another as Bonagee cruised to their third win of the season.

“I’m absolutely delighted for Aidy McLaughlin,” Gibson said.

“He’s come back in for pre-season, worked hard and got himself into good shape. If you cut Aidy, he’d bleed green and yellow, he’s Bonagee through and through. I’m delighted for him.

“I came in here three seasons or so ago and he had a season done in the Donegal League. In the lockdown, we just thought maybe he would have something to offer. It has been nothing but positive from him.”

After a narrow 2-1 win over Finn Harps Under-21s on Wednesday, Gibson altered his team and the returned Jordan Armstrong also bagged a brace with the experienced Michael Funston also on target.

Bonagee were without the injured Gareth Harkin and Packie Mailey while Gibson also added former Institute striker Gareth Brown ahead of a derby date with Letterkenny Rovers on Saturday evening.

Gibson said: “We have brought in Gareth Brown to add to our attacking options. He’ll bring a lot to us. Training has been good and it’s great to work with a squad of this size.

“When they have the jersey, they’re fighting to keep it and when they don’t have it, they’re fighting to get it. That’s healthy.”
