Loreto Secondary School in Letterkenny is celebrating after being awarded a Greenschools flag for Biodiversity.
After the adversity of Covid, many delays and postponements, this didn’t stop the passion and ambition of this group of students.
During lockdown and through the reopening of schools, this committee worked non-stop accomplishing building a 100% recyclable polytunnel made from plastic bottles and bamboo sticks to grow fruit and veg such as green beans and strawberries, actively organising cleanups and practicing recycling and composting in school.
The committee also participated in the #Love30 Campaign, Bee Friendly Zone, the no plastic campaign, “keep cup.”
Greenschool Captain, Caitlin Faye Maniti, worked with An Taisce Regional Officers Aengus Kennedy and Aine O’Loughlen on this campaign presenting to Donegal county council.
Loreto Letterkenny is one of two post-primary schools in Donegal to receive a green schools flag this year.
They will now proudly present this flag among their other 4, Litter and Waste, Energy, Water and Travel flags.
They are currently they are working towards their sixth Greenschool flag.
Some of the activities they have lined up so far are the fashion fix campaign, cultural week which runs from the 22nd till the 26th and a clothes swap shop for the students and staff.
These are all promising upcoming events and the Green schools can’t wait to get back to work.
The Green Schools Team of Loreto Letterkenny would like to give a special thank you to their teacher facilitator Ms Siobhan McKeague, Principal Ms Gerardine Mullen and the whole school community for making this happen.
