Support for the Mica campaign is being shared countywide, with 48% of people backing 100% Redress.

An independent public opinion survey found that 78% of the population supports Mica homeowners in their quest for redress.

48% of those surveyed said homeowners should get full redress, while 30% of respondents said homeowners should get “something but not 100%”.

A sample of more than 1,000 adults took part in the independent survey by Opinions between 23rd and 28th October.

The survey showed a strong awareness of the Mica campaign, which was boosted by this year’s protests in Dublin. Media appearances by members of the Mica Action Group and political leaders and TDs have all brought attention to the crisis. Other key awareness events were the schoolchildren’s protest at the Dáil last week, and the “slow drive” protest on the M50 in Dublin.

Almost 80% of people who were aware of Mica agreed that “Ireland needs to look after its people in their time of need and these homeowners need our help now”.

A further 75% said that the same redress should apply for Mica homeowners as Pyrite homeowners.

And 45% said that they think this issue will have an influence on how they vote in the next election.

On the other hand, 21% of those aware said they felt that it is not the State’s problem to fix. 31% said why felt sorry for these homeowners, but they wouldn’t be happy with the Government paying to fix their homes.

Support for 100% Redress was found to be strongest in Connacht/Ulster.
