The government is now considering a cap of €400,000 on the Mica Redress Scheme.
An enhanced redress scheme is being ironed out by government this week, but conclusions have not yet been reached.
The Irish Times reports that a new cap of up to €400,000 per home is being considered.
Even with this raised cap, the Mica Action Group says 17% of families will be left behind.
Ann Owens of the Donegal Mica Action Group said the details are key: “We are striving to get the best possible scheme,” Ms Owens told Newstalk FM.
“This time we will be looking at everything. We won’t just be looking at the cap. We will be looking at guarantee, which is a red line issue.
“We will be looking to see if second properties are covered.
“We are not just saying if we get a cap of €400,000, we will accept that. We will also be looking at the government investigation.”
Ms Owens added that homeowners have a right to be compensated through public funds.
“The government have wronged the people of Donegal by lack of legislation over 35 years. What I accept is needed for our homes to be returned to market value, to be habitable, for people to not be living in houses where they are afraid to lose their lives,” she said.
A proposal for a new scheme is to be brought before the cabinet in the next fortnight.
