Another worrying 5,634 cases of Covid have been confirmed today.
There are 684 people in hospital with the virus with 126 of these people in intensive care.
Changes to individual actions and behaviour are the best ways to tackle the transmission of Covid-19, according to the Chief Medical Officer.
Dr Tony Holohan has called for people to buy into ongoing public health measures and to follow them.
Speaking on RTÉ’s Morning Ireland, Dr Holohan said failure to put mitigation measures in place would have resulted in every Covid-19 case possibly infecting around six to eight other people, whereas the reproduction level is currently 1.25.
“We have a growing level of infection that need not happen. It is not inevitable that they will pick up this infection,” he said.
“If we get that behaviour, if you like, as good as it can be – cut down the people who are most likely to spread this infection from circulating in the population – we can have an impact in terms of transmission.
“Government can’t make people do that.”
