Donegal Women’s Centre to begin 16 days of activism

Donegal Women’s Centre are launching a new social media initiative to mark the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence.

No More Memorials is a campaign seeking to help end violence against women in our community and educate all about the resources available in Donegal. The initiative is part of the United Nations global #16DaysOfActivism campaign, which celebrates its 30-year anniversary with the 2021 theme, ‘Let’s End Femicide’.

A spokesperson said: “Our theme this year is #NoMoreMemorials. Since our 16 Days campaign last year, we have seen too many images in Irish media mourning the loss of sisters, daughters, mothers and friends due to gender-based violence. No more. The centre will be posting local Donegal based information and resources throughout the sixteen days, culminating in a day of reflection and remembrance on International Human Rights Day which falls on December 10th. We will also be posting information for younger women on our llash Young Women’s Clinic accounts about recognising the signs of intimate partner abuse in non-domestic situations.

“We invite those in our community to like, share and use the hashtags #nomorememorials, #16daysofactivism and #letsendfemicide to help us get the information out to those in our community who need it.”

Donegal Women’s Centre is located on the Port Road, Letterkenny (opposite An Grianán) and offers Domestic Abuse Trauma Psychotherapy and Trauma Informed counselling and support services, healthcare for people who menstruate, a Young Women’s Clinic called ILASH (I Look After Sexual Health) providing free contraception, testing and guidance for those aged 17-25, and trauma-focused healing and therapeutic activities. They also provide an appointment based listening service which can be accessed by calling 074 91 24985.
