The Donegal Garda division has recorded the greatest number of attacks on its members outside of Dublin.
There have been a total of 35 attacks on Gardai across Donegal so far this year, a number matched only by Laois/Offaly outside of the busy capital districts.
A number of these Gardai have been forced to take time off work as a result of the injuries suffered during the course of their work.
The Gardai’s South Central Division in the Dublin Metropolitan Region suffered the most attacks with 43 so far this year, followed by 32 in the DMR West and 29 in the North Central Division.
Other figures show how gardai also dealt with 45,000 public order offences in the middle of the pandemic.
The issue was raised at the 43rd annual conference of Gardai in Kerry
GRA President Frank Thornton voiced his concerns on the issue as Justice Minister Helen McEntee addressed the GRA delegates via video link.
The group has urged the Government to implement mandatory sentences to anyone convicted of assaulting frontline gardai.
Latest stats show that there have been 4,200 guards assaulted over the past five years with attacks rising from 700 assaults in 2016 to 1,096 last year.
