Throughout its history, the Department of Tourism at Killybegs has evolved to keep pace with the growing demands of the hospitality and tourism industry. Bringing together food, business, hospitality, culinary science and technology has enabled the department to develop as a national centre for innovation through, product development, hospitality/tourism education and training.
Michelle Hunter, part-time culinary lecturer at LYIT and proprietor of Thyme Out, Letterkenny, states: “the reason why the team here at LYIT initiated this academy, is we wish to be responsive to the demands of the sector at this time. Chef Academy Killybegs serves a number of objectives, including providing professional education to the sector.”
This new Chef Academy programme will further enhance the opportunities for staff, students and the general public. Cookery demonstrations will take place throughout the year in the state-of-the-art Killybegs facilities. The on-campus restaurant will offer a dining experience for reduced prices and the public is invited to avail of these offerings. The culinary students at Killybegs will participate in major national competitions in the New Year as well as a transition year initiative which will provide exposure to the art of culinary.
Speaking about the programme, Head of Department Nicola Dunnion, says: “the reason we have launched Chef Academy Killybegs is we feel that activities run through this initiative will provide LYIT with the required exposure to the future generation of chefs and to the current professional chefs in the sector. Ultimately this academy is about exposing our current students to real-life work situations as much as possible, ensuring their preparedness for the working world and pushing them to be the best chefs they can be.”
The Department offers a range of courses, from short certificate programmes to degree level qualifications in culinary arts, hospitality, tourism, food science and technology, industry-based programmes and preparatory programmes enabling students to access higher education in the region.
