Serious concern after another crash on ‘forgotten road’

Urgent calls have been made for repair works on the Meenaroy Road today following another accident.

A two-car collision was reported this morning on the Breenagh Bridge on the R250 between Glenswilly and Meenaroy. The accident is not believed to be serious, but a local Councillor is warning that it’s only a matter of time before there is a fatality on this road.

Last month, following another accident, Cllr Donal ‘Mandy’ Kelly called for repair works to be carried out on bridges on the Meenaroy road as a matter of urgency.

Cllr Kelly has dubbed the Meenaroy Road ‘The Forgotten Road’ because of the lack of action on the infrastructure, which lies in serious disrepair.

The main bridge has a 20ft drop down from the road, and is constantly getting worse. A second at the bottom has seen several accidents throughout the years.

Speaking today, Cllr Kelly said: “These bridges need to be addressed. Funding needs to secured as soon as possible.”

Donegal County Council applied for funding to the Department of Transport in September 2020 for the widening and realignment of Meenaroy Bridge. The works are on the county’s priority list, but, one year later, there has been no update on funding provision.

Cllr Kelly added: “I’m putting the pressure on the council to seek emergency funding, and I’m going to continue to apply more pressure on until it happens.”
