Donegal records below-average cases as new variant spreads nationally

Donegal has so far been less-impacted by the new Omicron variant than many other counties in Ireland, new figures show.

The HPSC reports below-average Covid-19 figures in the north west again this week.

Donegal is 21st on the list of the most-affected counties in the Republic, with the hotspots now in Dublin and Louth. Omicron now accounts for about two thirds of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Ireland.

1,552 new cases of Covid-19 were detected in Donegal in the two weeks up to Sunday. The 14-day incidence rate is now 974.9 per 100,000, compared to the national average of 1350.7. The incidence rate is down slightly from the previous week, when it was 1045.3 per 100,000.

With the Omicron variant now accounting for 52% of all new infections, the HSE are stressing the importance of getting a booster vaccination.

The best ways of avoiding the Omicron variant is to get vaccinated, says Director of Public Health North West, Dr Anthony Breslin.

The COVID-19 Vaccination centre in Letterkenny has extended its walk-in hours to allow people the opportunity to get their COVID-19 booster vaccination ahead of Christmas.

The centre will be closed on Saturday December 25th and Sunday December 26th and will reopen on Monday December 27th.
