‘Friends of Luke and Zach’ are going for 10 winter swims in the sea over the next month to raise money for charity.
Friends of Luke & Zach are a local organisation founded in the parish of Mevagh, Co Donegal to support two young twin boys with Angelman Syndrome.
The group are going to complete ten swims/dips each in the wintery Atlantic sea between 20th December 2021 and 20th January 2022 in aid of the ‘Luke and Zach Foundation’.
So far they have raised over €1,200 of their €1,500 goal.
Angelman Syndrome is a rare genetic disorder resulting in a sever learning disability. One in 20,000 people have Angelman Syndrome, which is 250-350 people in Ireland alone.
People with Angelman Syndrome may speak only a few words, many do not walk, most suffer debilitating seizures and all require 24/7 care throughout their lives. Individuals born with this condition are known for their great personalities and warm smile.
Scientists recently made breakthrough discovery that a common antibiotic, normally prescribed for teenage acne, can restore the intellectual and motor functioning in a mouse with Angelman Syndrome. Human trials have began since 2012.
The organisation has been set up to support the boys and their family in a number of ways:
Possibility of future clinical trials
Home modifications
Raise awareness of Angelman Syndrome and most importantly to make that warm smile on their faces even bigger.
