A cloud of grief is hovering over Arranmore Island following the tragic death of a local student yesterday.

An 18-year-old male lost his life in a drowning accident off the coast yesterday afternoon.

The young man, who has yet to be named, is understood to be a Leaving Cert student who attended the local secondary school, Gairmscoil Mhic Diarmada.

The man was swimming with a friend at the beach at Leadbh Gharbh when he got into difficulty and was taken out to sea by a large swell. The alarm was raised after 2pm. Gardaí and the Arranmore lifeboat responded to the emergency.

The casualty was removed from the water and received treatment from medics at the scene, but was later pronounced dead.

His body was taken to Letterkenny University Hospital where a post-mortem will take place at a later date, gardaí confirmed.
