Donegal County Council’s #BuyDonegal shopping campaign went worldwide again last Christmas – and was talked about 6,000 times.

The annual social media campaign was initiated in 2020 to showcase the best of Donegal business to a global audience. Over the two months from 5th November – 31st December 2021, #BuyDonegal reached 13.9 million accounts on social media. Its second year saw over over 300 businesses taking part and 90 businesses were showcased through virtual town tours across all parts of Donegal. Overall, more than 150 businesses were featured across digital platforms.

Donegal County Council generated a huge level of consumer engagement and the support of well known Donegal ambassadors such as Noel Cunningham, Packie Bonner, Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh,Donegal Daddy and many more.

The phenomenal reach of the campaign was assisted with features on RTÉ’s Radio Na Gaeltachta, Ocean FM, Highland Radio, Donegal Daily and the Inish Times.

The success of the initiative was also rewarded with a local government award for ‘Promoting Economic Development’ by Chambers Ireland.

“The #BuyDonegal team would like to thank all consumers, businesses, business groups and media outlets who supported the campaign. An additional thank you to businesses and consumers who provided feedback on the campaign and congratulations to Jimmy McCarthy from Glenfin who will receive a Donegal branded goody bag who was the winner of our consumer survey competition.”
