Major redevelopment works at Burtonport Harbour are set to begin as early as next week.
Two new buildings, including a new ferry terminal building, will be constructed to create a modern sustainable harbour for the village and surrounding islands. The buildings will accommodate Donegal County Council office accommodation, meeting room, public facilities, ferry offices, waiting area and tourist desk facility and a retail unit building containing a number of small mixed use retail units.
McDermott & Trearty Construction Ltd have been appointed as contractors for the Ailt an Chorráin Harbour Redevelopment project.
Cllr Micheál Choilm Mac Giolla Easbuig said initial demolition works could begin as early as next week.
Cllr Mac Giolla Easbuig told Donegal Daily: “It’s fantastic to see the progress. This is a really big story for Ailt an Chorráin, Árainn Mhór and for West Donegal. It’s a game-changer in terms of the pier and the community.
“As work starts, I believe there has to be ongoing consultation with the community there. We must not lose sight of the fact that Ailt an Chorráin is a fishing village and we can’t leave the fishing community behind.”
The total cost of the project is €2,295,290 with €1,854,677 being provided under the Rural Regeneration and Development Fund (RRDF) in April 2021. Upgraded funding of €211,084 was announced last October.
