Gardaí investigating the fatal assault on Ashling Murphy have arrested a man in his 30s.

The male is now detained in Tullamore Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.

Ashling was buried this morning following her funeral mass in Co Offaly.

She was murdered on Wednesday last around 4pm as she jogged along the banks of the Royal Canal near her hometown.

Gardai said last week that a man in hospital in Dublin was a person of interest to them in their investigation.

An Garda Síochána said it has no further comment at this time.
