West Donegal man caught with child pornography haul may face further charges

A West Donegal man charged with having a huge haul of child pornographic material at his home could face even more charges, a court has been told.

Gardai raided the home of Paul Cowell in Meenacladdy, Gaoth Dobhair on December 11th.

Inside his home they uncovered a huge haul of illegal material.

It includes 202 videos and 412 images.

Cowell is charged with having 198 movies depicting extreme sexual and physical abuse of both male and female prepubescent children and babies being abused by adult males and females and other children.

He is also charged with having 303 images depicting extreme sexual abuse of both male and female prepubescent children and babies being abused by adult males and females and other children.

Evidence was given of the arrest, charge and caution of 53 year-old Cowell, who is originally from England by Detective Garda Enda Jennings.

Detective Jennings outlined that the victims in the case were not directly known to Cowell with the majority located elsewhere Europe and also Asia.

Cowell, who has been living in West Donegal for more than 15 years, was charged under Section 6(1) of the Child Trafficking and Pornography Act, 1998

His case was mentioned again at Letterkenny District Court where Garda Sgt Jim Collins said they were awaiting an oral direction in the case from the Director of Public Prosecutions.

He added that there was also the possibility of further charges in the case.

His solicitor, Mr Patsy Gallagher, said there may be a future bail application saying independent parties were being put forward as surety.

Judge Alan Mitchell adjourned the case until February 7th for directions, possible further charges and a possible bail application.
