In simplest terms, the fashion industry could be defined as the business of making clothes, but that would ignore the important distinction between fashion and apparel. Apparel is functional clothing, one of people’s basic needs, but fashion combines its own prejudices of style, individual taste, and cultural evolution.

Niamh Porter had always dreamed of studying a third level programme within the area of Arts and Design. Inspired by her secondary school art teacher who saw Niamh’s talent, she began studying the Fashion with Promotion course at LYIT. Niamh commented, “I love any form of art. I loved the Fashion with Promotion course and I am glad that I chose it. The lecturers were fantastic and the small class sizes allowed me valuable one-on-one time. I got to know everyone in my class, and we had the opportunity to help each other with projects and learn from each other. The most enjoyable aspect was the freedom to discover my own style and what aspect of fashion I wished to focus on.”

Niamh Porter – We Still Burn Her Collection

When Niamh graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Fashion with Promotion degree in 2018, she embarked on her journey to New York securing employment with a Brooklyn based company as a design assistant. Niamh added, “It was literally like the Devil Wears Prada. I worked on New York Fashion Week and I designed clothes for some well-known personalities including Mary J. Blige, Michelle Obama and Zendaya. Although it had large clients, the design company was small and intimate and allowed me lots of hands on experience. It was a whirlwind experience that was made possible by the skills and knowledge that I learned at LYIT. The Fashion with Promotion course at LYIT had photography, business and social media modules that greatly helped me with managing my workload at the company”.

When Niamh returned to Ireland in 2020, she had plans to set up her own business, but her plans changed due to the Covid-19 Pandemic. Niamh further commented, “I felt as if this was the perfect time for me to return to the LYIT to complete my BA (Honours) degree in Fashion with Promotion, something I had always planned to do in the future”.

Niamh returned to LYIT in September 2020 to study the BA (Hons) in Fashion with Promotion. She added “Returning to study after gaining industry experience was definitely the right path for me, it allowed my design style to mature and helped me better visualise and plan the design process from idea to runway. My collection was made using all eco-friendly materials and hand dyed using natural dyes. Working from home during the pandemic was a challenge but the lecturers were, as always, incredibly helpful and encouraging. Now that I have graduated, I’m working with an incredible Irish company that’s expanding to a global level. I’m so grateful for my time spent in the LYIT. Don’t be afraid to dream big, to be yourself and to concentrate on your own journey.”

Niamh Porter from Donegal starred in a documentary commissioned by Junk Kouture and supported by the Creative Ireland Programme ‘Waking the Muse’
