CAO Countdown @LYIT: Eimear’s Student Story

LYIT’s Department of Law, Public Service & Education has over twenty years’ experience in delivering Law education in the North West. The department offers two CAO programmes in Law; an LLB (level 8 honours bachelor degree) and Law with Criminal Justice (level 7 bachelor degree). Both programmes, when you reach the level 8 standard, are qualifying law degrees which means if LYIT students wish to pursue a career at the bar, to become a barrister, then this recognised by the ‘Kings Inn’ for doing this. Similarly, it provides the required preparation for the ‘Law Society Entrance Exams’ if the students wish to become a solicitor. Both programmes provide a great foundation for a wide variety of careers in Law from advocacy to legal advisor, researcher to law enforcement, there is a wide variety of graduate career opportunities from both LYIT programmes.

Eimear Doogan is a fourth-year student in the BA (Hons) in Law with Criminal Justice. Eimear studied her Leaving Certificate in the Rosses Community School and chose LYIT in her CAO choices in 2018.  Eimear is really enjoying her time at LYIT and has thoroughly enjoyed meeting new and interesting people from a wide variety of backgrounds. Eimear commented, “There are so many things that I love about LYIT, but the main thing for me is the atmosphere on campus. It is friendly and welcoming which really adds to your academic experience. My time at LYIT has been so enjoyable. I enjoy the course and the student experience. I have done some many diverse modules in this degree from ‘Alternative Dispute Resolution’ to ‘Victimology’, which I find really interesting.”

Eimear’s student experience has really added to her time at LYIT, as a Student Ambassador at LYIT, she has supported recruitment fairs and Open Days and is involved in aspects of student life. Eimear added, “LYIT is unique when you compare LYIT to larger universities in Dublin or Galway. At LYIT, you are able to interact in your lectures and also, connect directly with your lecturers. It’s so easy to approach your lecturers and to ask questions, the lecturers at LYIT encourage this, which in my opinion is different to larger universities.”

Eimear is excited about her future, when she graduates, she plans to progress into the area of Youth Advocacy, she commented, “After I graduate this year, I hope to go on to work in the area of Youth Advocacy. Throughout the past 4 years, I have been able to learn about many different areas of law and through that I have developed an interest in the Criminal Justice system here in Ireland and in particular, how the system works in relation to young people. As I reflect on the last 4 years, I can say without any hesitation that my choice to attend LYIT was a great one. If I was to go back to the beginning, I would happily do it all over again.”

LYIT’s Department of Law, Public Service & Education offers 2 CAO programmes. To find out more about the Department of Law, Public Service & Education CAO programmes available at LYIT visit: https://www.lyit.ie/Study-at-LYIT/Find-a-course/?lvl=100
