Gardaí in Donegal are offering parents helpful advice about the online world this Safer Internet Day, which takes place today.
The Garda National Cyber Crime Bureau, in conjunction with the Garda National Community Engagement Bureau and Webwise Ireland are advising everyone to #TalkListenLearn to prevent becoming the victim of online abuse or crime.
“We would like to encourage parents and children to have open conversations about life online,” said garda spokesperson Sgt Charlene Anderson.
There is a wealth of material in relation to online safety to be found at www.webwise.ie. There are a number of upcoming webinars for both parents and children to mark ‘Safer Internet Day’ and the registration details may be found on the website.
Sgt Anderson said: “We encourage parents in particular to have a look at the website as it is packed with useful tips and information in relation to apps and other social media platforms that their children may be accessing.
“Children are so engrossed in the online world and it is important that parents are aware of the dangers they may face while online and how best to protect them. It is also important that parents can speak openly to their children about their experiences online whether they be good or bad.”
