Significant evidence has been recovered in relation to the aggravated burglary and assault of Sligo pensioner Tom Niland.

A major search took place across the Ox Mountains as far as Lough Easkey yesterday to identify any material of evidential value to the investigation into the “callous and cowardly” crime.

Mr Niland, 73, remains on life support after sustaining serious head and upper body injuries when three masked men forced their way into his home at Doonflynn on the N59 in Screen and attacked him on the night of Tuesday, January 18. His family say they are fearing the worst as his condition shows no sign of improvement.

Gardaí say they recovered more evidence during Sunday’s searches.

Superintendent Mandy Gaynor, Sligo Garda Station, said she is determined that the criminals who carried out this crime will be brought to justice.

She said: “I am confident there are still people out there who know who was involved in this aggravated burglary and serious assault on an elderly man in his home. I am asking you to do the right thing and come forward. Any information that you may have no matter how small or insignificant you think it maybe could be significant to the investigation team. Any information received will be treated in the strictest confidence.”

If you believe you have information that is of assistance to the investigation team please provide that information directly to the investigation team in Sligo at 071 9157000.
