Facemask rule may be scrapped as early as next week

The National Public Health Emergency Team (Nphet) may be about to recommend an end to the requirement for face masks.

The group is due to met on Thursday to discuss the latest Covid situation across the country.

One aspect to be discussed is the wearing of facemasks.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin had previously said he believes face masks should continue to be worn “irrespective of whether it is mandated or not”.

If Nphet do make a recommendation it would also mean that students would no longer have to wear masks during lessons.

Presently people are required to wear masks while in shops and also on public transport.

However Nphet may only rule to make this a recommendation meaning it is up to individuals if they want to wear a mask or not in such settings.

People will still have to wear masks while on planes as this is an EU directive.
