A man has appeared in court charged with assaulting a woman.

Brian McLaughlin appeared at Letterkenny District Court charged with two counts of assault and also possession of drugs.

McLaughlin, of McGettigan’s Flats, Main Street, Milford, was arrested on February 22nd at 11.40pm at his flat.

Garda Suzanne Gordon told the court that when the charges were put to McLaughlin he replied “I never laid a hand on that woman.”

Gardai objected to granting McLaughlin bail in the case.

Sergeant Jim Collins said the accused was already on bail for a number of other unrelated matters.

Solicitor for the accused, Mr Frank Murphy said his client lived a distance from the alleged injury party, did not drive and was prepared to give any undertaking to get his bail.

He said his client was battling to stay clean form drugs and a refusal of bail could set him back.

However, Judge Brendan O’Reilly said he was willing to grant bail on a number of conditions.

They include that he stay out of Ramelton, have no contact with the alleged injured party, sign on daily at Milford Garda Station, observe a nightly curfew, provide Gardai with a mobile phone number and provide a personal surety bond of €500.

The case was adjourned to March 14th.
