Gardai yesterday detected a number of vehicles speeding on icy roads in the Letterkenny area.

Letterkenny Roads Policing Unit clocked one car travelling at 156 KPH, well above the recommended limit of 100 KPH.

“Slowing down on the approach to junctions, corners and bends is critical,” a garda spokesperson said.

“Each time you travel, decrease your speed in order to decrease your risk of being seriously injured or killed on the roads.”

Meanwhile, the spokesperson added, sunny clear days and icy roads are forecast.

“This combination can result in ‘sun glare’. Drivers can be temporarily dazzled or blinded by the intensity and brightness of a low sun on the horizon. I

n such conditions drivers are reminded to minimize the risk by wearing sunglasses.”

Motorists should also ensure their windscreen is clear of grease or grime inside and out.

Add windshield washer fluid to the water in the reservoir and check that the wipers are not worn away or damaged.

Replace them if they are.
