A Donegal school’s fundraising 5k has been given the seal of approval by Ireland’s most famous scientist.

Trinity College Dublin Professor Luke O’Neill took time out from his research to send a special video message to the pupils, staff and families at Loreto Secondary School in Letterkenny.

Prof Luke, a world-renowned immunologist who lifted the nation with positive messages during the Covid-19 pandemic, urged everyone to support the Loreto virtual 5k which takes place between March 12 and March 20 this year.

He praised Leah Mullan from Loreto for asking him to make the support video, adding: “Exercise is great and it’s good for your health and your overall immune system!”

The initiative will provide much needed funds for the school whilst simultaneously allowing friends and patrons of the school an opportunity to partake in some exercise at a time and place of their choosing.

The TY captains organised an art competition in the school over the past number of weeks  to design a logo/slogan  for the event and look at the fantastic logo that won.

This was designed by a first year student Sofia Basilio.

The County Seat Letterkenny is the main sponsor of the event this year.

The Loreto Secondary school is a voluntary school and there are considerable costs in running the school.

They have been educating girls on the same site since 1854 – staff couldn’t do that without the outstanding support of the local community and businesses.

Judith Hannon, committee member, with Brendan McAteer of County Seat.

Everyone is being urged to walk/run/jog/cycle/push a buggy/walk a dog for 5k during the period of the 12th to the 20th March 2022.

And when you have completed the walk/run etc please POST YOUR PICS (and time if you wish) for everyone to see on the Loreto Letterkenny run facebook page.

Loads of prizes up for grabs e.g. best fancy dress, best St. Patrick’s Day outfit, best hat, youngest participant, oldest participant and loads more.
