A man was hospitalised after he was attacked with an iron bar in Letterkenny overnight.

The incident happened in the Long Lane area of the town.

It is understood the man, who is in his 50s, was returning from work when he was set upon.

The reason for the attack is not yet known.

Those who attacked him also stole the keys to his car.

It is understood the car was later found abandoned in another area of the town.

The man managed to make his way to Letterkenny University Hospital where he received treatment.

His condition is not yet known.

A Garda spokesperson said “The man received a number of superficial injuries but none of his injuries are life-threatening.

“We would appeal to anybody who knows anything about this incident to contact Letterkenny Garda Station on 0749167100.”

Local county councillor Gerry McMonagle, who lives in the Long Lane area, condemned the unprovoked attack.

“I would appeal to anybody who knows anything about this attack to contact Gardai.

“This sounds like it was a premeditated attack and any information on it should be given to Gardai.

“I understand that the victim’s condition is not life-threatening but I want to wish him a speedy recovery,” he said.
