Danielle McLaughlin Anniversary: Grieving mum constantly seeking justice

THE mother of murdered Donegal woman Danielle McLaughlin says she fears her daughter’s memory is being forgotten.

Andrea Brannigan urged everyone to remember Danielle today on the fifth anniversary of her death.

Danielle was 28-years-old on a backpacking trip in India when she was murdered on March 14, 2017.

A memorial mass took place in Danielle’s hometown of Buncrana on Friday evening, where family and friends gathered at St. Mary’s Church, Cockhill.

Speaking to the Irish Mirror, Danielle’s mum Andrea said she fears the murder trial of the alleged killer could take years. The case against local man Vikat Bhagat, who stands accused of killing the young Donegal woman, has been beset by delays since it began four years ago. The case is to be moved before a female judge, but no restart dates were given.

“I am constantly looking for justice, fighting for information and fighting to get heard,” Andrea said.

“I just feel Danielle is being forgotten about so I want everyone to remember her on Sunday when she was murdered and Monday when she was found.”

Andrea revealed that her last text to her daughter urged her to be careful, as the area where Danielle was staying was particularly busy with Holi festivities.

Danielle’s last text to her mum, on 13th March 2017, said she was with”my friend Vikat” and said: “It’s holi and a crazy day in India. It’s safe though. I am nowhere near the crowds.”
