Prominent Mica campaigner Paddy Diver has announced he’s leaving the 100% Redress Mica campaign.
The Carndonagh man, whose own home is affected by defective blocks, spearheaded the recent campaign to scrap the initial redress scheme for the benefit of all homeowners.
Mr Diver alleges that he has been subjected to “abusive text messages” and his family have also been brought into the onslaught.
He took to Twitter to announce the end of his public activism: “It’s been a difficult few days but I’ve come to the conclusion that I can no longer continue to be a part of the 100% Redress campaign.
“Family and health comes first and to be truthful it’s taken its toll recently.”
Mr Diver was a leading figure in the Mica protests in Buncrana and Dublin last year and engaged with Ministers on behalf of homeowners. He had a seat on the Working Group on Defective Blocks Grant Scheme set up by the Housing Minister in the summer. Diver resigned his seat on the group in late July, citing frustrations with the lack of progress early on.
Mr Diver assured his followers on social media that the Mica campaign will continue without him.
“Mica Action Group continue to fight for all of you and are working hard to achieve OUR goals. They’re up against a government and housing department that couldn’t give one toss about you, so the fight for you, for all of us, does not stop because of me.”
Cathaoirleach Jack Murray commented on Paddy’s decision last night and said: “I don’t think I’m alone today in saying that I stand with Paddy Diver. This county owes you a debt of gratitude sir. Stand strong.”
