Residents oppose boardwalk at scenic Donegal lough

Residents have appealed a decision to grant planning permission for a public boardwalk and viewing area at a scenic lake near Ballybofey.

Donegal County Council granted planning permission to Ballybofey and Stranorlar Integrated Community Company (BASICC) for the development at Trusk Lough.

However, some local residents have appealed the decision to An Bord Pleanala (ABP).

In their objection, concerns were raised that the development was being carried out without consultation with the local community.

They also claimed there could be an impact on an environmentally sensitive area and that the development would detract from archaeological, scenic and geographical features.

In response, council planners said the erection of site notice afforded the public the opportunity of the statutory consultation period.

It said the lough is not listed as a protected site and the sensitivities of the area were considered in the planners’ assessment.

The council ruled the application would be in accordance with the planning and sustainable development of the area and granted planning permission with four conditions.

ABP is due to decide on the appeal in June.
