The Letterkenny Shotokan Karate Club is braving a barefoot walk for the Irish Guide Dogs Association this May.

The ‘paw-some’ fundraiser takes place on Saturday 28th May at 2.30pm at the Aura Leisure Letterkenny.

John Wilkie and the crew will be shedding the shoes and socks to walk the track, and they are hoping that supporters will sponsor each pebbly step.

Those who donate will be entered into a raffle with the chance of winning one of six amazing prizes. Top prize is 500 litres of home heating oil, or win vouchers for Brian McCormick Sports, Sweeney Electrical, McCallion Jewellers, Early Bird Cleaning or a meal for two!

All funds raised will be donated to the Irish Guide Dogs Association, supporting their work changing lives for people who are blind or visually impaired and families of children with autism.

Jennifer Doherty and Sybil, John Wilkie from the Shotokan Karate Club and Michelle Healy, ouppy raiser with six-month old Hope at the launch of the Barefoot Walk

Jennifer Doherty from Buncrana, who is a Donegal branch member, praised the club for their fantastic fundraising idea.

“As a fundraiser, I think it’s a brilliant idea, it’s something different and it’s something fun, and there are some amazing prizes in the raffle,” Jennifer said.

“As a guide dog owner it’s brilliant to think people would support people to get independence and it’s something that is going to help people to live their life, whether that’s to get around or an assistance dog for a family with autism. That can totally change a family’s life. You can’t thank people enough for that.”

There are some exciting things happening with the charity in Donegal this year, as the county’s first litter of guide dog puppies are being raised to be guide dogs or assistance dogs. The pups, now six months old, are beginning their journey with puppy raisers all over the county and getting their first tastes of life as a guide dog.

To support puppies in training and the ongoing awareness of Irish Guide Dogs, please donate to the Barefoot Walk which takes place on Saturday 28th May, the day after Guide Dog Day on 27th May.

To support the Letterkenny Shotokan Karate Club Fundraiser please contact John to sponsor the Barefoot Walk or to buy a raffle ticket. Tickets are €2 each or get a book for €20.
