The Boston St. Patrick’s festival celebrations provided the perfect backdrop for a cultural and economic mission of Donegal County Council delegates and businesses.

There are long standing cultural, economic and historical ties between the city of Boston and Donegal.

Cathaoirleach of Donegal County Council, Cllr. Jack Murray stated ‘’it’s a privilege to lead a delegation to Boston at what is a time of great opportunity for our two regions.

“Despite the challenges faced in today’s world, Donegal and Boston’s connection remains strong and collaborative. There is a huge diaspora network residing across the city whose contribution to Boston and the nationwide Irish-American community has been enormous.’’

Four acclaimed Donegal businesses, fashion designer Edel MacBride, textile artist Laura Buchanan, Triona Design and Sliabh Liag Distillers proudly flew the Donegal flag at the prestigious St. Patrick’s Breakfast event held in the city’s Convention Center.

Leas Cathaoirleach of Donegal County Council, Cllr Martin McDermott added: “our hosts were thrilled to have these great businesses come to Boston and give a flavour of both the traditional and contemporary craft and design sectors in Donegal. It was very pleasing to see them represent and showcase our county so well.

“All four businesses successfully export to America and the activity provides a chance to strengthen existing business relationships while also explore new distribution opportunities:.

Alongside the traditional craft and design businesses, Donegal is home to a number of US businesses such as United Healthcare, Abbott and Prudential Inc. and another focus of the mission is to highlight the offering of Donegal for US investment opportunities.

With a well-educated and deep talent pool, supportive business environment and world class digital connectivity, the region is well placed to facilitate expansion for US organisations seeking additional sites within the EU.

Garry Martin, Director of Service for Economic Development at Donegal County Council added: “there has never been a better time to showcase what ‘brand Donegal’ has to offer international business, particularly to our close friends in the USA. With our strategic location on the EU/UK border, this gives the opportunity to establish an EU base in the only English-speaking member state. We welcome opportunities for new American businesses who can grow and flourish in our conductive business culture.”
