The Letterkenny Rotary Club is hosting a collection point for goods for the Ukraine Disaster Appeal this Friday.

The club will have their monthly paper shredding service operating at Letterkenny Shopping Centre this Friday morning, 10.30am to 12.30pm, 25th March in aid of Donegal Down Syndrome Association. Alongside this, they will also be accepting essential items for delivery to the people of Ukraine.

Specific materials that are urgently needed include food (dry goods , tinned, non perishable, and in particular children’s food ) and kitchenware (cooking utensils & cutlery) as well as clothing in really good condition, strong working boots of all sizes, sleeping bags and mats. All donations will be gratefully accepted.

A local club spokesperson said: “It is a tragic and sad time for the people of Ukraine and the world. At Rotary, we are deeply concerned by the devastating situation unfolding on a daily basis, and escalating loss of life and the humanitarian hardships being endured there, which will have repercussions for many years to come. Rotary International General Secretary has recently met with Rotarian leaders from Ukraine and other neighboring countries, which has resulted in the Rotary Disaster Response Fund, who will work in collaboration with other emergency response organisations including Red Cross and the United Nations to ensure that all of our efforts are complementary and coordinated. This gives us in Letterkenny, a central point of contact and assistance in our fund raising efforts through our District International Team.

“We are extremely grateful to DPL depot who are providing transport to a central depot in Dublin free of charge on Friday after the collection closes at 12.30pm.   Should anyone wish to discuss further what to donate or how to help, then please contact Club President Ed Wickes 087 9097628 for further information.”

“A generous cash contribution of over €3000 has already been forwarded to District, which was raised by Rotary members and other generous donors, and this will all go directly to providing immediate essentials in Ukraine, eg food, medicines, clothing and shelter as well as first aid and clean drinking water.   However, Rotary will be working on the ground throughout this crisis and long afterwards, ensuring that provisions reach those that require immediate and long term help.”

Free Confidential Paper Shredding: Once again, Friday 25th March, (last Friday of each month) the service will take place at the Letterkenny Shopping Centre in association with United Shredding Company and the Letterkenny Rotary Club, and all for just a donation to the Donegal Down Syndrome Association. Light commercial loads also accepted for a ‘commercial’ donation too.   To date over €1100 has been raised through this scheme, and this money assists service users availing of speech and language therapy, physiotherapy, and swimming lessons, to name a few.

The USL unit will be situated on the right hand side of the car park near the entrance of Letterkenny Shopping Centre, from 10.30am until 12.30, so just come along and members of the Rotary Club will also be on standby to assist if needed.
