Donegal vs Armagh: Will league history favour Donegal?

With Donegal facing Armagh in the final game of Division 1 in a must win scenario, we looked back at previous league encounters with The Saffrons.

2021: Armagh 1-16 Donegal 1-16

In the split season of last year, in which the four Ulster Division 1 teams competing in the North group, Donegal travelled to Armagh and drew, a results that suited the visitors.

Having defeated Tyrone in the opening group game, followed by a draw against Monaghan, Donegal knew a draw would guarantee them qualifying for the semi-finals.

While Donegal will be without Michael Langan this weekend, he scored an important goal while Patrick McBrearty scored 8 points as Donegal came from 4 points down with 13 minutes to go to secure the vital point that helped them top the table.

2019: Donegal 1-9 Armagh 0-11

Langan was again instrumental as Donegal overcame Armagh on their way to promotion in this Division 2 encounter.

The St. Michael’s man scored 5 points while Michael Murphy came off the bench to score 1-2 as Donegal ran out narrow victors in this 1 point win in MacCumhaill Park.

2014: Armagh 1-8 Donegal 2-10

Donegal fans will be hoping for a repeat of this last game of the league as Donegal were promoted as the Athletic Grounds.

Colm McFadden scored 0-6 and Murphy got a goal either side of half-time with McBrearty and Rory Kavanagh picking up the rest of the points as the eventual Sam Maguire runners-up returned back to the top flight.

2012: Donegal 0-13 Armagh 0-10

If there was ever a game to look back at for optimistic Donegal fans who believe in fate, this is it.

10 years before this weekends clash, Donegal needed a win at home to Armagh in the last game to stay up in Division 1.

Two points down at half time with the score 0-7 to 0-5, Donegal kept Armagh to just three points in the second half while Colm McFadden scored five points in total for Jim McGuinness’ side as they ran out three point winners.

The rest of the year went quite well for Donegal too.
