Donegal woman to hike to Everest base camp for late grandmother

A Donegal woman is set to embark on her journey of hiking 5000m to the Everest base camp next week in memory of her grandmother who died of Alzheimer’s.

Glenda McGinty from Letterkenny will begin her journey on the 31st of March for two weeks in extreme conditions and altitude with temperature reaching as low as -17.

Glenda has nearly raised the €12,000 goal on her JustGiving page for her granny Janie with the donations going to the Alzheimer’s Society.

The trip was initially scheduled for 2020 but due to covid restrictions, Glenda has had to reschedule multiple times.

Glenda said: “My whole world fell apart the day my granny passed away with Alzheimer’s. She was my rock and my best friend. The most amazing and selfless person.

“A few weeks before she passed away I made a promise I’d do something amazing in her memory and what better way could I do this than do one of the world’s toughest treks.

“But I’m doing this for this absolutely amazing charity to help raise vital funds to help fight dementia. And I’m especially doing this in my memory of my granny. So granny this ones for you.”

If you would like to donate, visit the JustGiving page at https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/glenda-mcginty.
