Charlie Bird has offered his condolences to the family of a Cork woman who died during a charity hike on Saturday.
Cora O’Grady, aged 51, became unwell during a climb at the Galtee mountains in Tipperary. She had been taking part in the national ‘Climb for Charlie’ event in support of broadcaster Charlie Bird.
She was hiking with her two children when she became unwell on the descent. She was assisted by paramedics, but was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.
Taking to Twitter, Charlie paid tribute to Cora. He wrote: “I want to offer my condolences this morning to the family and friends of Cora O Grady from Mitchelstown in County Cork. Cora who was climbing in the Galty mountains took ill and passed away. Her family and friends are in my thoughts and prayers.”
The Climb with Charlie events are expected to raise more than €2million for Pieta House and the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association. Charlie Bird was joined by Donegal’s Daniel O’Donnell for his emotional climb up Croagh Patrick. Writing afterwards, Charlie said: “Wow I am completely blown away by the amazing support for climb with Charlie all over the country and abroad. I cried so much yesterday, but they were all tears of joy. A big loving hug to everyone. Thanks everyone.”
