Glencar Inn Saturday Division One

Cappry Rovers Reserves 2 v 1 Kilmacrennan Celtic Reserves

In a game played in ideal conditions in Cappry Park it was the home side who created the first opportunity when Jamie Murray crossed for Paul Duncan but his effort went over the bar. Kilmacrennan were always dangerous on the break and took the lead when Gary Gorman lobbed Dylan Doherty in the Cappry nets.

Cappry pushed to get level but a combination of poor finishing and good Kilmacrennan defending kept the away side 1-0 ahead. Cappry did get level early in the 2nd half when Dean O’Donnell scored a penalty. In what was an open second half, both sides had chances, it was Cappry who took the lead when Odhran Quigley Doherty played Dean O’Donnell through who was taken down by the Kilmacrennan keeper and from the resulting penalty Dean O’Donnell slotted home.

Kilmacrennan had a great chance to draw level but Dylan Doherty made a fine save from a penalty. He made another few fine saves late to keep Cappry’s lead intact. Two team Performances. Referee: Tony McNamee

Glencar Inn Saturday Division One

Glencar Celtic  0 v 0 Arranmore United

Glencar had the better spells of play in the 1st period but didn’t create any clear-cut chances and couldn’t breech the Arranmore defence. The 2nd half was much of the same, Glencar good in possession but to no avail. Brendan Proctor had a good opportunity to put the visitors on front late on but blazed over the bar.  Honours even a fair result

Glenea United Reserves  4 v 4 Oldtown Celtic

In fine conditions for football both sides had to settle for a point apiece in this high scoring hard fought game. Despite playing against the breeze the home side started well and forced the Oldtown keeper into two fine saves in the opening minutes from Calvin Murray & Luke Mc Carry.

Oldtown took the lead on 10 minutes when Kevin Mc Grath picked up a loose ball and found the top corner from 25 yards out. Glenea equalized 2 minutes later when Cathal Mc Geever’s effort from a direct free kick found the corner of the net. Glenea continued their good play and took the lead on 20 minutes when Calvin Murray’s through ball released Luke Mc Carry who rounded the goalkeeper and slotted home.

Oldtown pushed hard for an equaliser and came close on a couple of occasions but eventually got an equalizer on 30 minutes when Luke Nelis was fouled in the box and Tommy Mc Laughlin converted the resultant penalty.  Both sides had chances to take the lead again but failed to convert them until the 42nd minute when Kevin Mc Grath headed home a Nelis corner. Glenea equalised on the stroke of halftime when Luke Mc Carry was fouled in the box and Cathal Mc Geever converted the penalty.

In the 2nd half the away side started strongly and force Oran Craig into a couple of fine saves. Glenea regained the lead again on 55 minutes when Cathal Mc Geever’s long range free kick was misjudged by the away keeper and ended up in the net.

Oldtown continued to look for an equaliser but were finding it hard to create any clear-cut chances though they came close on 65 minutes when Ciaran Gibson’s saw his free kick come back off the bar. Oldtown eventually equalised on 73 minutes when Gio Peoples got onto a Kevin McGrath’s through ball and lobbed it over the home keeper.

Oldtown pushed for a winner while the home side looked to play on the break and almost took all the points when Luke Mc Carry played in Calvin Murray but he saw his effort just go wide of the post. As full time approached Oldtown had one last effort which was well saved by Oran Craig. Best for Glenea were Kevin Boyle, Remy Moran & Cathal Mc Geever, while Kevin McGrath & Luke Nelis impressed for Oldtown. Referee: George Montgomery

Keadue Rovers Reserves 3 v 1 Strand Rovers

Keadue Reserves won this local derby at a breezy Central Park on Saturday to move to 5th in the table after a good performance against their local rivals. Played in front of a big crowd, Keadue started the brighter and on five minutes a Michael Greene effort was well saved by Cormac Hanlon. Strand then started moving it around well, getting a bit of a foothold on possession, however Keadue broke away and following a few passes Aaron Mc Cafferty came on to a loose ball and fired home to the left-hand corner.

Only four minutes later, Keadue increased their lead when a corner from the right side was scrambled around the area and up popped Aaron Mc Cafferty again to steer it home. Strand had their first chance on twenty minutes when a shot came in from James Mc Cole but it was easily saved.

Just past the half hour mark the home side made the game safe when Aaron Mc Cafferty was upended in the box and up stepped Peter Mc Gee to tuck away the spot kick. In the second half, with the wind behind them, Strand were quick out of the blocks and a good Odhran Gallagher effort was just wide after fifty-two minutes. Michael Greene was then close for Keadue a few minutes later but Hanlon was alert in goals. On the hour mark, the home side should’ve made it four when Mark Boyle headed against the bar and sub Luke Neely fired over the rebound from close range.

A few minutes later though Strand pulled one back when a free kick from twenty-five yards was fired home well by Shane O’Donnell. Strand continued to have most of the possession but Keadue limited them to very few chances apart from the seventy eighth minute when a cross into the area was headed to the far post and Shane O’Donnell blasted over from close range. Keadue made a few substitutions to see the game out in relative comfort and now they have four wins on the bounce and a fine end to the season. Best for Strand Rovers were Shane O’Donnell, Aaron Ward and Odhran Gallagher, while best for Keadue were Michael Greene, Aaron Mc Cafferty and Liam Boyle.

Referee: Liam McLaughlin.

Donegal Physiotherapy & Performance Centre Division Two

Gweedore United 1 v 0  Whitestrand United

This game, played on Friday night at Carrickboyle, saw the home side earn a hard fought 3 points to secure the 3rd place play-off promotion spot against a very strong Whitestrand. In the opening half defences were on top with neither side giving very little away.

In the 10th minute Jordan Nugent latched onto a breaking ball for the visitors following a defensive mix up, however Ethan Harkin recovered well to prevent an opening goal. In the 11th minute Stephen Doyle Mc Fadden shot just over for the home side.

Aaron Curran hit an excellent shot from about 25 yards for the visitors and it just skimmed the top of Cian Gallagher’s bar. Both sides had some half chances in the remainder of the half, however it remained 0-0 at half time. In the second half Gweedore began to take the ascendancy with Mark Mc Fadden and Cathal Gillespie controlling midfield and United pressed the Strand defence from the word go.

The home side seen good early chances by Paul Doogan, Stephen Doyle Mc Fadden and Ryan Kelly, however couldn’t get the opener. It looked like it was going to one of those games for the home side, however in the 57th minute they broke the deadlock when Mc Fadden was pulled down in the box for a penalty.

Ethan Harkin slotted the penalty into the top corner to the relief of a big home support. Whitestrand to their credit went in search of an equaliser and it was a good tight battle right until the end. Credit to both sides as they entertained the large turnout at Carrickboyle on the night. Jack Lafferty and Warren Mc Ginley excelled for Whitestrand with a strong team performance for the home side.

Referee: Dessie Mc Laughlin.
