Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly has welcomed a ‘significant milestone’, as the number of people in hospital with Covid-19 falls below 500.

As of 2pm today, there were 21 patients with the virus in Letterkenny University Hospital.

Yesterday saw the national hospital figures fall to the lowest level this year, with 532 patients in hospital with Covid at 8am.

The numbers have fallen even further today, with 520 patients in hospital with Covid-19 at 8am, falling to 496 by 2pm.

Writing on Twitter, Mr Donnelly said: “Our Covid hospitalisations have fallen below 500, which is a significant milestone and so very welcome.

“These figures were reported at 2pm today (Sunday). All of the data is trending in the right direction. There are fewer patients with Covid being admitted to ICU, which had 40 patients with Covid as of this afternoon.”

There were 754 Covid-19 patients in hospital last Sunday, though that amounted to a significant reduction on two weeks earlier – there were 1,433 people in hospitals with the virus on 4 April.
