Rural householders will not be penalised for burning turf – report

Households in small villages and one-off houses will still be allowed to burn turf.

The Sunday Independent is also reporting that those who sell it to family and neighbours will not be penalised as part of a Coalition compromise to see off a backbench revolt.

Green Party junior minister Pippa Hackett said allowances will be made for people to burn turf in “genuinely rural areas” and the State will not go after people who sell bags of turf to their neighbours and friends.

The plans are part of a Government move to ban the commercial sale of smoky fuels due to come into effect this September, which earlier this month sparked major concerns in Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael.

Tánaiste Leo Varadkar subsequently announced a pause in the plans, a claim that was disputed by Environment Minister Eamon Ryan, who is bringing forward the regulations.
