Opening up vacant social homes is amongst the ideas to be used to accommodate Ukrainian refugees arriving in Ireland.
A number of measures are now being used by Minister for Housing Darragh O’Brien.
The ideas are to be brought before Cabinet tomorrow on medium and long-term housing options in response to the refugee crisis.
Around 33,000 Ukrainian refugees at expected to have arrived here by the end of next month, with concerns of a shortfall of around 8,000 places.
RTÉ News reports that this includes an expanded “voids programme” whereby vacant social homes will be brought back into use.
Around 6,000 such homes were brought back into use over the past two years under a similar scheme.
Local authorities will be asked to submit the numbers of such properties available in each area and the extent of work that is needed.
