Works are underway this week to have the car park for the Great Arch Trail in Fanad open for summertime.
Donegal County Council has stated that surfacing works are expected to be complete by Friday. After this, lining and road markings will be carried out to have the car park ready for public use “within the next few weeks”.
The new 500-metre pathway to the Great Fanad Arch allows visitors to walk directly to the impressive 150ft sea arch and enjoy the stunning natural marvel.
The car park and access path is set to bring many new visitors to the once ‘hidden gem’. The site has been the subject of controversy in recent years after a private landowner put up a blockade preventing public access to the much-cherished amenity. The Great Arch Action Committee was set up in response to the row and has been campaigning for the restoration of access since. Donegal County Council took on the Great Arch Access Project in 2019.
