Councillor Micheal Cholm Mac Giolla Easbuig has welcomed the planned works for Donegal’s offshore islands.

Donegal County Council has advised, however, that the timescales are approximate only and are subject to various changeable factors.

An extension has been granted for the works on Owey Island until September 2022.

A contractor is appointed to deliver unbound material to the island.

The ferry company is continually monitoring the forecast and once a suitable window is available, they have confirmed that the stone will be delivered.

Once the material is delivered, the works will follow immediately.

Arranmore Island

The council has procured a contractor and commenced prep works on the Lighthouse Road on Monday past, 9th May.   Prep works on the lighthouse road will involve cleaning open drains, opening drainage channels, replacing 8 – 10 no road crossings, amendments to the parking area at Beaver Island and minor surface repairs.

The road will remain open however some short localised traffic disruption may be experienced.

Once the lighthouse road is complete the contractor will continue to prep the remaining funded roads on Arranmore Island and this work is expected to take 4 – 6 weeks.

The tenders have also been received for the Bitmac Contracts and the winning contractor has provisionally pencilled in the last week of May or 1st week of June to complete the lighthouse road.

Some traffic disruption will be experienced on the lighthouse road during the surfacing works.

No definite timeline is available for the surfacing phase of the remaining roads on the Island, however, DCC is aiming to complete by the end October as per the funding conditions.

 Gola Island – 2022 Works

A Natura Impact Statement (NIC) is being finalised and is expected to be completed in the next two weeks.

It is envisaged that, subject to the NIS approval, the road will be prepped once the contractor has completed the Arranmore Island works (i.e.  approximately the start of June).

No definite timeline is available for the surfacing phase however, DCC is aiming to complete this project by the end of September as per funding conditions.

Tory Island – 2021 and 2022 works

An extension has been granted for the 2021 surfacing works until September 2022.

The surfacing layer will be applied to this section in conjunction with the 2022 works.

The lighthouse road on the Island will be prepped once the contractor has completed the Arranmore Island works (i.e.  approximately the start of June).

No definite timeline is available for the surfacing phase, however, DCC is aiming to complete by the end of September as per funding conditions.

Inishbofin Island – 2022 Works

The road will be prepped once the contractor has completed the Arranmore Island works (i.e.  approximately the start of June).

No definite timeline is available for the surfacing phase, however, DCC is aiming to complete by the end of September as per funding conditions.
