‘People shouldn’t have to come to Dublin again to protest,’ Doherty

Deputy Pearse Doherty has questioned the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Deputy Darragh O’Brien, on his plans for dealing with the defective blocks scandal.

The Donegal TD said: “Minister, families are living in crumbling homes in Donegal, Mayo, Sligo Clare and across many other counties. They have waited and waited for a just scheme, one that is right for purpose and one where they can start to rebuild their lives.

“The defective concrete block grant scheme, which has been in operation since 2020, by your own admission has fallen far  short of what is required.

“It is almost a year now since thousands of people came to the street and protested here in Dublin in an appeal for justness and fairness; they shouldn’t have to do that again.

“I know you are in discussion with representatives of the homeowners but my questions to you this morning are: When will you publish the legislation for the upcoming scheme? Will you ensure proper scrutiny, including pre-legislative scrutiny? And will it deliver genuine, 100% redress for these families?”
