Mark English began his outdoor season in Belgium on Saturday with a win in the men’s 800m at the IFAM Outdoor International Flanders Athletics Meet.

The Finn Valley AC athlete finished with a time of 1:46.61, ahead of Norway’s Tobias Grønstad who finished just behind in 1:46.68.

English had a successful 2021, breaking Irish indoor and outdoor records for the 800m and competing in the Tokyo Olympics, and has had a promising start to this year as he looks to push on from last year’s success.

On Thursday, English was given an Olympic recognition award at the Donegal Sports Star Awards, with his father Joe accepting the award on his behalf.

Meanwhile in France, Anne-Marie McGlynn was 25th in the European 10,000m Cup.

The Letterkenny AC woman finished in 33:31.73, with the Kenyan born, Turkish athlete Yasemin Can winning in a time of 31:20.18.
