A diligent student from Donegal enjoyed a day at Leinster House recently after winning a prestigious writing award.

Thomas Cannon, a Fifth Year History Student at Loreto Community School, was the Ulster Senior winner of the Treaty Debates Essay Competition.

He visited Leinster House in Dublin, the seat of the Oireachtas, to collect his award.

Senator Mark Daly, Cathaoirleach of Seanad Éireann presented the awards. Also in attendance was Thomas’ History teacher, Mr. K. Mc Taggart and his mother Mrs. H. Cannon.

Thomas’ essay is about the role and contribution of two local Donegal TDs (Joseph O’ Doherty and Peter Joseph Ward) to the Treaty debates and is currently on display in the County Museum, Letterkenny.
