Gardaí have revealed that almost 600 crashes occurred on Irish roads over the June bank holiday weekend.

Eight people lost their lives in six separate collisions last weekend.

A total of 182 drivers were arrested for suspected drug and drink driving and 2,960 speeding offences detected.

The total number killed on our roads in 2022 to 79. Today, gardaí are highlighting that this is 79 sons and daughters.

A 17-year-old boy was the latest person to die following a two-vehicle road traffic collision in Co Cavan yesterday.

The number of fatalities this year is an increase of 32 compared to date in 2021 and an increase of 15 road fatalities compared to date in 2019.

Speaking today Assistant Commissioner Paula Hilman, Roads Policing and Community Engagement said: “An Garda Síochána remains committed to ensuring compliance with road traffic legislation to improve safety on our roads. But every road user can play their part too.”
