Letterkenny Councillors have set out to quash rumours that the main street will be closed during rally weekend.

The Joule Donegal International Rally takes place in Donegal from Friday 17th June until Sunday 19th June, with temporary road closures planned outside Letterkenny.

Cllr Michael McBride told the Letterkenny-Milford MD that local business owners were concerned by the “talk around town” that the main street would be closed.

Cllr Gerry McMonagle, chair of the Joint Policing Committee, said that there are no official plans to close the street this weekend, but gardaí reserve the right to close the street periodically in the interest of safety.

“There is going to be a massive crowd hopefully coming for the rally, we want people to come here and enjoy themselves,” Cllr McMonagle said. “We want a safe and free flowing rally and that businesses and locals will be respected.”

“There is a focus on keeping the town open and welcome.”

One temporary road closure in Letterkenny has been agreed at the right turning lane entering the Cullion Road from the N56 4 Lane road. The road will be closed from 7pm on Thursday the 16th of June 2022 until 2pm on Monday the 20th of June 2022.
