Libraries throughout Donegal are taking part in Summer Stars, the public library reading programme for children which runs from June until the end of August.

All children throughout the country are invited to join the adventure and to enjoy the fun and pleasure of reading and writing over the summer.

Summer Stars is non-competitive and every child who reads even one book/ ebook is regarded as having completed the programme – and it’s all completely free!

Cathaoirleach of the Donegal Municipal District, Cllr Niamh Kennedy commented, “Donegal County Council is delighted to launch this fantastic literacy programme. With a fabulous range of free events in libraries across the county and some free goodies for those taking part, I am sure the children will really enjoy taking part in Summer Stars.

“It is great to see that our libraries have resumed a full schedule of live events again and that, as always, the service offers a wide range of excellent services for everyone in the community”

This year, children and their families can join arts, crafts and Harry Potter workshops, storytelling, fitness classes, drama sessions and Escape Chest challenges.

Children will also get the opportunity to meet local Donegal authors such as Malachy Doyle and Louise Flanagan. Summer Stars will celebrate the Irish Legends Golf Tournament presented by the McGinley Foundation at the Rosapenna Hotel and Golf Resort in August, with its Glow Up a Golf Ball competition, and storytelling sessions in Ionad Achmainne Teaghlaigh Mhíobhaigh.

There are lots of brilliant books for all reading levels along with audiobooks and e-books to help you escape through the wonderful BorrowBox app. Borrow, read and listen to the Summer Stars collection of children’s e-books and e-audio books using the app. This is free for all members to use and non-members can join online for free at https://www.librariesireland.ie/join-your-library

Children and families can find out what else Donegal County Library Service has planned for Summer Stars by checking out our website www.donegallibrary.ie and by following @DonegalCountyLibrary on Facebook and @DonegalLibrary on Twitter.
