Emergency services attend crash in accident blackspot

Gardaí and emergency services are at the scene of an accident at Meenaroy this Tuesday evening.

A collision involving a van and a car occurred in the last hour at the bottom of the hill on the R250 Glenswilly to Meenaroy road, which has become a serious accident blackspot.

The incident has not been described as serious.

Mayor of Letterkenny-Milford Donal ‘Mandy’ Kelly told Donegal Daily that the collision is a further indication that urgent works are needed in the area. “How long do we have to wait for something to be done? It’s too late when something fatal has happened, and that is coming down the road,” Mayor Kelly said.

Cllr Kelly has made repeated calls for a redesign of the Meenaroy bridges which are in a dangerous state of disrepair. The walls of the bridges present a real danger on this busy route, he said, while one bridge sits over a 20-25ft drop into water.

Cllr Kelly is planning to raise the issue again at next week’s sitting of the Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District.

Donegal County Council is currently Specific Improvement funding to repair the bridge on the R250. The project is next on the list for works when funding is available, but Cllr Kelly said there is no time to waste.

“These bridges need to be addressed as a matter of urgency. The last funding allocation went to roads design of the outer relief road, I am asking that this gets used at Meenaroy instead. This is about saving lives.”
